Diabetes and Foot Problems: Prevention Is Better Than Treatment

Diabetes and foot problems occur together more often than not.  Diabetics have difficulty healing due to the combination of poor circulation and high blood sugar.  Despite these various difficulties, diabetic foot problems do not necessarily have to be the inevitable result of your condition.  It is entirely possible, through a little planning and extra care, to maintain healthy feet and avoid many of the complications that cause diabetics to lose their feet.

Prevention is the best method of dealing with diabetes and foot problems; they are easier to prevent than they are to mitigate. Many complications can be prevented by taking steps to protect your feet before they are damaged. When it comes to preventing injuries to the feet, the first step is preventing rubbing and chafing as much as possible. Rubbing and chafing could lead to the skin being broken, which can lead to ulcers and many other problems. This chafing can be prevented by wearing seamless socks beneath your diabetic slipper or other footwear of choice.

Keeping your feet clean is also an important part of taking good care of your feet and preventing complications.  Fungal infections such as athletes foot, while irritating to most, can progress quite a bit more in diabetics due to their elevated blood sugar levels.  Much more severe complications, as well as amputation, could potentially be the result of one of these infections spreading to an open wound.  Preventing an infection from developing is possible largely through washing your feet frequently, though it is also important that you make sure that the water is not too hot for your feet.

The numbness that results from diabetic neuropathy could lead you to burn your feet without meaning to.  Many foot care devices, such as foot baths and heating pads, might burn your feet without your noticing when diabetes and foot problems occur.

Foot problems are among the most common complications of diabetes. Foot problems are very common to diabetics, so prevention is the best method of dealing with them. Just remember that your feet need a lot more care than they used to and that you have to take extra care of them if you want them to remain healthy.  You may also want to consider supplements, such as pine bark extract, in the treatment of your condition.
