Maintaining Normal Blood Sugar Levels At Work

Having type 2 diabetes can be difficult.  You need to be sure that you eat the right things, get enough activity, test your blood sugar levels, and more.  When it comes to getting the proper nutrition at work, it can be very difficult for a diabetic.  Most of the snack and cafeteria foods that are available in most office settings are not exactly diabetic-friendly.  Still, it is entirely possible to eat right and keep your blood sugar under control, even when you are trapped in an office all day.

Most of the time, the only source of snacks in an office will be a vending machine. This is particularly troublesome for diabetics because the snacks stocked in vending machines tend to be filled with processed flour and sugar. This makes them not only nutritionally void, but potentially troublesome because of the strong tendency for these foods to cause blood sugar spikes.

The best way to get around this and ensure normal blood sugar levels is to supply your own snacks. If you have a mini refrigerator in your office or cubicle, fresh vegetables, cheeses, and meats are a great option. Type 2 diabetes does well when you eat plenty of nutritionally dense foods that are also high in fiber, such as celery sticks. If you don't have a refrigerator, however, your best option is to take a bag of nuts with you. They are nutritious, tasty, and filled with fiber. They do have a good deal of calories, however, so be careful to pre-measure your portions.

When it comes to cafeteria food, unless your office has an upscale cafeteria, you are going to run into a very similar problem. The food tends to be cheap and come from processed sources. The vegetables usually come in a can and the foods in general are filled with salt, processed flour, and sugar. This can wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels, and not eating runs the same risk. If you eat, your blood sugar may spike, but if you don't eat, your blood sugar will fall too low.

So, how do you get around this? Bring your own lunch. It may seem like you are being pressured into eating the same things that our coworkers are, similar to the same kind of pressure you got when you were going to school. Just remember that your blood sugar levels are more important, and make your lunch ahead of time.

When you spend all day at the office, it can be very difficult to eat properly. Most of the food that is usually provided is not something that diabetics should be eating. Just take the time either in the morning or the night before to plan your own snacks and lunches, and your blood sugar levels should be fine.  These are the best health tips we can offer regarding eating right at work when you are a diabetic.
